As is usual the final group games in Euro 2012 threw up some interesting results and all of my predictions out of the window.
In group A an inspired Greece beat Russia 1-0 and the Czech Republic beat Poland also 1-0, These final results meant that the Czech Republic finished top of the group and Greece qualifed in second place due to the rather bizarre rule in this tournament where the head to head results of the teams finishing on the same points are taken into account allowing Greece to qualify ahead of Russia!
In group B Germany beat Denmark 2-1 and Portugal beat Denmark 2-1 with Germany and Portugal going through to the quater finals with 9 points and 7 points respectively.
In group C Spain did what they needed to do and beat Croatia 1-0 with a late goal from Jesus Navas with Italy beating Ireland 2-0 and qualifying at the expense of Croatia. Spain qualified as group winners with Italy as runners up
In group D England beat Ukraine 1-0 with a simple Rooney header just after half time. Ukraine had a goal disallowed which should really have been given and wouldn’t have made any difference as they failed to win the game and England. Sweden surprised everyone by beating France 2-0 gifting England the top spot in the group and a quater final tie against Italy avoiding the current World and European champions for which we are all grateful.
As to who can the win tournament now I would not like to hazard a guess as it is literally anyone’s to win now.
