In 1979 Margaret Thatcher became the British Prime Minister; Arsenal won the FA Cup beating Manchester United 3-2 with a last minute winner; Gali Atari and Milk and Honey win the Eurovision Song Contest 1979 for Israel, with the song Hallelujah and Alien, Escape to Athena, Moonraker and Monty Pythons’s The Life of Brian were released in cinemas.
Also that year the first issue of Doctor Who Weekly was released with free transfers and two full Doctor Who Panoramas. The magazine featured a weekly comic strip adventure featuring the current Doctor, as well as a couple of shorter back up comic strips.
The very first issue had an introductory feature about the series up to that point in time. The second issue (pictured above) had a feature about The Cybermen, and a synopsis of the shows first story An Unearthly Child.
By issue 44 the magazine became monthly and changed its title to Doctor Who A Marvel Monthly.
33 years later the magazine is still going strong.
