In 1985 the production of Doctor Who was suspended for a period and there was a cringeworthy charity single produced. Titled Doctor In Distress this pop ditty was written by Ian Levine and Fiachra Trench. Do They Know It’s Christmas? it was not.
The combined talents of Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant, Anthony Ainley, Nicholas Courtney, Hans Zimmer, Faith Brown, Jona Lewie,Bobby G, David Van Day, Warren Cann,Sally Thomsett, Justin Hayward amongs others recorded this under the name Who Cares. It turned out to be a very aposite name as the single failed to chart despite the opening refrain of “18 months is too long to wait bring back the Doctor don’t hesistate!” and the rousing chorus “Doctor In Distress – let’s all answer his SOS Doctor In Distress – bring him back now we won’t take less”
Proceeds from the single went to the charity Cancer Research, so, ultimately, some good did come of it.
