There are a number of things that I find quite surprising about this book. The first thing is that nothing is taboo in this book and that anything goes and anything can be mentioned and discussed within its pages along with some of the language and swear words that are used that seem to stick out in a book written in the early part of the twentieth century.
For all I know people swore like troopers back then and this was just exactly the sort of way that people did speak and express themselves, which is not what you are used to from the majority of the books written at the time.
You can see why it was banned as it must have been quite shocking at the time. I mean how many other books have a scene where on the main characters has a poo!
It is not surprising that the book is a challenging read and that it has taken me quite a while to read as far as I have (page 280 as of writing).
