WORLD CUP 2014 DAY EIGHT

Columbia score twice to beat the Ivory Coast who almost but not quite got back into the game despite a fine goal from Gervinho in the second half. Columbia now top group C.

England met Uruguay and Luis Suarez in a game which was a must win game for both teams. A draw wouldn’t have been a bad result for either team at a push but a win would be so much better. We didn’t play quite as well as we did against Italy but we did have plenty of attempts on goal. Rooney could have had three or four. Suarez only had a couple of shots on goal. The problem was that he converted both of his, and Rooney only managed to convert one of his so we ended up losing by a single goal and now have no points.

Uruguay were not better than us on the night, but Suarez is simply sublime and he was the difference between the teams today. It was almost but not quite good enough for us, which is often the story of England at the World Cup. We can still qualify though as long as Italy win both games and we convincingly beat Costa Rica. Stranger things have happened, at this World Cup for instance!

Japan and Greece played out a goalless draw in the final match of the day each retaining a hope of qualifying for the final 16.
