Day Nine of the World Cup saw one of the biggest surprises of the World Cup with Italy losing to Costa Rica by 1 goals to 0. This was not surprising on the day as Italy, and Pirlo in particular, were kept quiet for the entire game which allowed Costa Rica to play their way, which was enough to get a really good win which sees them virtually in the next round and Italy needed to get a result against Uruguay to ensure their passage to the last 16.

Switzerland took on France in a game between the two teams expected to qualify from their group with both of them having 3 points from their first game. A win would see either team with a foothold in the round of 16 and France very quickly put the tie to bed with five, yes, five goals. Switzerland got two late goals back to make the final score a little less one sided but they were very much the poorer of the two teams and France look good for the nenxt phase.

Honduras managed to take the lead against Ecuador in their match but it didn’t prove to be enough as Ecuador score twice to take the points and stand a better chance of going through with Honduras all but out of the competition.
