World Cup 2014 Day Eleven

Belgium and Russia played out a not very thrilling game where each team didn’t really take much of an advantage when presented with opportunities. It took a teenage subsitute to unlock the game for Belgium, who should have cemented their victory a couple of minutes later with a shot from Kevin Mirallas which really should have hit the back of the net, but didn’t.

Algeria hadn’t scored a World Cup goal since 1982 so South Korea probably thought that they were in for an easy match but unlike previous Algerian teams this once scored for fun and they were 3-0 up at half time. South Korea hit back moments after the break but were not able to capitalise on this and Algeria got another one cementing their victory in a very definite fashion.

Portugal needed a result against USA and a win for the US would see them qualify for the round of 16. Portugal got an early goal from Nani in just the five minutes but the score remained the same for the next 59 minutes before Jermaine Jones got one back for the USA. Clint Dempsey got his second goal of the tournament with 9 minutes left of the 90 and the USA were looking good to qualify there and then before substitute Silvestre Varela hit an equaliser deep into stoppage time giving the USA no time to try and get one back.
