Scotland took on Czech Republic and did everything but score and came a cropper conceeding two goals including a wonder goal from Czech Republic striker Schick, which was from about 50 yards out when he hit it as Scotland’s keeper was playing rush goalie.

Poland took on Slovakia and went a goal down which went in off their own keeper, before equalising, then having a player sent off, and then conceeding a second goal which was enough for Slovakia too see out the game and get all three points.

Spain and Sweden played out a rather disappointing one all draw which was not the most interesting of games to watch but saw neither team really play better than the other, so a share of the points was the fairest result all round.

Hungary took on the holders Portugal in Budapest and for 83 minutes it looked like Hungary might have got a point but then Portugal wore them down and scored three in quick succession.

In the final match of the first load of games World champions France took on Germany. France were the victors in the end by two goals to nothing.
