Rounding up the group games for the round of 16 saw Sweden take on Poland. Sweden were already qualified but had to win to top the group. Poland has just the 1 point from 2 games so had to win for a chance of qualifying.
Sweden took the lead after just 82 seconds with a great goal from Emil Forsberg. Sweden went in at half time still in the leader, and top of the group. In the second half Robert Lewandowksi scored twice to level the scores but right near the end of injury time Claesson scored Sweden’s third and winning goal.
Spain also had to win to definitely qualify and ended up thrashing Slovakia 5 goals to 0 in a quite exciting game, if you are neutral, or a Spain fan.
In the final group France has 4 points and only had to get a draw to qualify, as had Portugal. Germany had 3 points so needed to not lose to go through and Hungary had 1 point and needed to win to go through, so all to play for in this group.
Hungary was the first team to score and Ronaldo score a penalty which meant that if it stayed like that Germany would lose out. Just before half time France equalises with another penalty and then just after half time Benzema gave France the lead.
Ronaldo then went and got another penalty and equalised again. Germany hit an equaliser only to fall behind again to Hungary before constant German pressure saw Germany equalise and both matches ended 2-2 with Germany saving their blushes and plucky Hungary losing out right at the end after a sterling display.
So the round of 16 sees Wales take on Denmark; Italy play Austria; Netherlands play Czech Republic; Belgium take on Portugal; Croatia play Spain; France take on Switzerland; England play Germany and Sweden take on Ukraine.
I wouldn’t like to take a guess on these fixtures as anything can happen. I only hope England actually start playing or football will definitely not be coming home.
