Wales took on Denmark and the Welsh started off ok and even at 1-0 to Denmark at the break it looked as though Wales might still stand a chance at repeating their last Euro’s adventure but Denmark soon got a 2nd goal and then later on Wales had a player sent off and things were made even more difficult for them and they ended up being thrashed 4-0 which was a bit unfair on Wales who didn’t play that bad and who were just kept at bay by Denmark who were better on the day.
Italy took on Austria and Austria defended their hearts out and kept Italy at bay for the entire 90 minutes of actual play and it was only in extra time that Italy finally broke the deadlock and went 2-0 up at the end of the first period, but then Austria managed to equalise five minutes before the end of extra time meaning that Italy were hypervigilant for the last five minutes or so, but they managed to prevail in the end.
In the Netherlands vs Czech Republic game it was even stevens for the first half but as soon as the Netherlands had a players sent of the Czech’s were in the ascendance and they hit the back of the net twice in the second half sending the Dutch home.
Belgium took on Portugal and a wonder goal by Thorgen Hazard near the end of the first half saw them go in at half time in the lead. Belgium were able to prevail with just the one goal despite the best efforts of Ronaldo and his hissy fit after the 90 minutes was priceless. The manager resigned after that but I doubt Ronaldo will go anywhere.
The Croatia versus Spain game saw Croatia take an early lead after an absolute howler from their goal keeper as he totally missed a back pass. Spain managed to equalise before the end of the first half and then score two more goals in the second half which should have been enough you would have thought. However Croatia woke up in the last five minutes and scored twice to take the match to extra time. In extra time though Spain hit the back of the net twice to make the final score 3-5 to Spain and the highest scoring match in the whole competition so far.
The France versus Switzerland game was another high scoring game. Switzerland took an early lead in the first half and it wasn’t until the second half when France scored two goals in quick succession by Benzema and then another wonder goal from Pogba. France should have shut up shop then but they didn’t and Switzerland managed to get the two goals they needed to take the tie to extra time. In the end not even extra time could separate them and the game went to penalties which Switerland won after France failed to score their last penalty.
England and Germany played each and for more than one hour it looked like it was going to be another one of those England games were we ended up losing on penalties but after 75 minutes Stirling managed to break the deadlock. Then five minutes before time Harry Kane hit his first goal of the championship and it looked like we might have done it. It was when Thomas Muller missed a sitter that we finally realised that we had done it and before long the whistle had blown and we had finally beaten Germany in a competative fixture for the first time since 1966.
Ukraine drew the first blood in the game in the first half and by the end of the first half the game was even. It was still even after 90 minutes but in the first half of extra time Sweden had a player sent off and then Ukraine threw everything at the Swedes and they had shot after shot after shot before about a minute before it went to penalties a Ukraine substitute managed to get away from the Swedes and score the decisive goal.
