Euro 2020 continues

So Wales took on Turkey knowing that a win would put them in good contention to progress and they played really well and beat Turkey 2-0 and Gareth Bale missed a penalty so it could have been even better. Ramsey also had some decent chances to further their lead but Turkey gave as good as they got.

Italy took on Switzerland and beat 3-0 giving them six points automatic qualification. Wales now have 4 points and Switzerland have 1 points.

This means that Wales could still go through if they lose to Italy but a point will give them automatic qualification even if Switzerland beat Turkey as that would gives Wales 5 points and Switerzerland 4 points.

If Switzerland draw, or lose then Wales will go through automatically even if they fail to beat Italy. Then it would seem unlikely that Switzerland would go through with just two points to the knockout stage.

A Switzerland win and a Wales loss will give them both 4 pointsbut Wales might make automatic qualification unless Switzerland can better Italy’s score against Wales.

It is really all to play for in this last round of group matches.

Euro 2020 days 4&5

Scotland took on Czech Republic and did everything but score and came a cropper conceeding two goals including a wonder goal from Czech Republic striker Schick, which was from about 50 yards out when he hit it as Scotland’s keeper was playing rush goalie.

Poland took on Slovakia and went a goal down which went in off their own keeper, before equalising, then having a player sent off, and then conceeding a second goal which was enough for Slovakia too see out the game and get all three points.

Spain and Sweden played out a rather disappointing one all draw which was not the most interesting of games to watch but saw neither team really play better than the other, so a share of the points was the fairest result all round.

Hungary took on the holders Portugal in Budapest and for 83 minutes it looked like Hungary might have got a point but then Portugal wore them down and scored three in quick succession.

In the final match of the first load of games World champions France took on Germany. France were the victors in the end by two goals to nothing.

EURO 2021 DAYS 2 & 3

Day 2 saw Wales draw with Switzerland in a game in which Wales were the weaker side in general but still managed to come away with a point. I am not sure if Wales will get through the group but I live in hope. I cannot see anyone but Italy topping the group but, if Wales can manage at least a win and another draw then they might be alright. I am not convinced that three draws would be enough.

The second game on Day 2 was the game between Denmark and Finland which nearly ended in disaster after Christian Eriksen collapsed just before half time and apparently had a heart attack. The game was replayed later on and Finland won but it could have been so, so, much worse and it really made you think about what was important.

The final days match saw Belgium easily beat Russia by three goals to nil. Romelu Lukaku scored twice and dedicated his first goal to Eriksen, which was nice. The day was overshadowed by the events in the Denmark game but luckily Christian Eriksen was revived and left the pitch awake and is now in hospital and getting the treatment that he needs.

Day 3 saw England start their campaign with a one nil victory against Croatia, goal scored by Raheem Sterling; then Austria beat North Macedonia 3-1 with North Macedonia equalising before Austria won the match comfortably in the end; and a thrilling game between The Netherlands and Ukraine which finished 3-2 to the Netherlands and saw all five goals come in the second half. The first half was so-so, but the second half was end to end and exciting to watch.

EURO 2020

Finally the Euro’s have begun and it can’t have come soon enough for me with lots of games to look foward to watching.

Naturally being English I don’t expect that we will win, and expect to knocked out on penalties at some point but I still like watching the matches regardless.

Game 1 saw Italy eventually overcome Turkey 3 goals to 0 but Turkey were doing alright and it was an unfortunate own goal that opened the scoring for the Italians and once they had got the bit between their teeth there was no stopping them. It was not surprising that they ended up the victors when they had not lost before this in 27 games.

In the sweep at work I have got Wales whose first game is against Switzerland. I hope that they can get some point in the bag with this game as Italy will be a hard task for them and Turkey will not be a walk in the park either.
